Here’s the deal: Event pages on Squarespace are the one really frustrating thing about the platform.
As of July 2024, there is still no way to create recurring events automatically, which is a feature that most churches need since they often have several weekly and monthly events! On this sample website, we demonstrate three different approaches to events/calendaring on your Squarespace site.
-
Check out this page to see the built-in Squarespace events function. Please note that, to get the calendar layout at the top, you must add a block to your page and choose “Calendar.” You’ll then click on “Edit” to choose “Events” to populate that calendar. You still must add events through the normal Squarespace process.

If your staff and volunteers don't have the time to manually add all of your events in the built-in Squarespace event function, you could choose to add images of your calendar and an accessible PDF download. See our sample page here.
Begin by creating a blank page titled "Events" or "Calendar."
On that page, add a blank section.
Within that section, add a text box across the top. In a large font, insert copy similar to "Download an accessible, screen-reader-ready version of our monthly calendar here" and then link that text to a file. You can create a simple list of events that will be read well by a screen reader and save it as a PDF. We recommend against linking to a PDF of a calendar in a table format, because screen readers don't always read those in a logical way, thereby defeating the purpose of having something accessible. Your PDF should have only text unless you have the software and ability to add alternate text to any images or graphics you are going to include.
Finally, add an image (JPG or PNG) of your monthly calendar and extend it to the full width of your page. Be sure to update the alt text for the image and mention the accessible PDF download link in the alt text.

There are many paid options you can use to include a more robust and collaborative calendar on your website. Here are two we recommend.
You can embed a Google Calendar on your website. However, to do that, you have to upgrade from the “Personal” subscription for your site ($168/year) to the “Business” subscription for your site which is $276/year, a difference of $108/year. You can see what an embedded Google calendar on your website looks like here. The actual process of embedded a Google calendar is very simple. All you have to do is add a block within any section and choose "Code." Then you'll copy the calendar's embed link into the code editing window that comes up when you click the pencil icon to edit the code block. You can learn how to grab the Google calendar embed code to add to your site here.
Having a “Business” account with Squarespace comes with other features that your parish may find useful. The most notable is a free year of a professional Google workspace account (so you could have an email address that is like “rector@yourchurchsite.org” instead of “rector-of-your-church@gmail.com”), advanced website analytics so that you can know how people are using your site and make informed decisions about what is working and what isn’t, and the ability to create pop-ups and banners so that, for example, you could have a pop-up with notices about Holy Week service times or to invite people to sign up for your email newsletter. Learn more about the Google Workspace Benefit with Squarespace business here.If you want to expand the features of your embedded calendar to include an event submission form so that people in your parish can directly submit new events to your calendar, we recommend using Tockify. Your Tockify calendar can be embedded into your Squarespace site in the same way that a Google calendar can, but it gives you more customization options including the layout of the calendar and the ability to accept community-submitted events, add files to events (like registration forms, etc.) and create buttons. The $80/year (or $96/year if you pay monthly) Premium Plan would work well for most parishes. However, keep in mind that this subscription would be in addition to having a “Business” subscription for your Squarespace site since you need the Business-level feature of being able to embed java code to be able to use your Tockify calendar on your site.
